Business Response to Struggling Economy

This is an excerpt from an interview conducted.

How do you stay afloat with our struggling economy? “We doubled our marketing and advertising efforts to achieve the same results we had before the recession.”

What do you do to stay ahead of them[Competitors]?
“Creativity. We create new markets and work outside of the box. Understand the concept ‘who controls the inventory controls the market.’ That is why we increased our budgets in marketing and advertising by 100%. Our competitors did exactly the opposite. Investing education and personal relationships along with staying current on the trends of the market has enabled us to remain competitive."

Interview conducted with George Lanza, CBI, M&AMI,
President of Plethora Businesses

Dr. Swartz's take on this years Summer Session

All,

Here is what students have to say about summer session 2010:

1.You prefer five week sessions by a 31-11 margin.

2.You prefer online classes by a 26-16 margin.

3.You prefer evening classes (24) and then morning classes (22) over afternoons (17).

4.The classes most requested are 421 (14), 480 (10), 416 (9), 408 (8), and 307 (6).

Comments: It would appear that almost all classes other than something arranged like internships or projects will be over a five week session.
We will offer only a limited selection of online classes, however, because some courses are not designed for this kind of learning. We will array our offerings leaning toward mornings and evenings.
we intend to offer those five most requested classes along with our gateway course, possibly online, IBM 301. Because demand is not expected to be high we likely will offer only those seven classes along with IBM 400, special projects, and IBM 441/442, internships.

First Annual IBM Softball Challenge Cup, Who's In??

IBM Students,

Who says the IBM Department doesn’t know how to have fun?

Anybody ready for the First Annual IBM Softball Challenge Cup?

Here’s the plan. The four IBM student clubs engage in a softball playoff with the winner of the playoff getting the right to take on the undefeated FACULTY TEAM in a winner take all showdown for the prized IBM Challenge Cup AND bragging rights for an entire year! (Warning: the faculty team cheats and reserves the right to stack its lineup!)

If you’re on two or more clubs you pick your team. If a club doesn’t field a full team you can merge with another club.

AND the IBM Department provides FREE FOOD at the event! (Sorry, we can’t do beer on campus)

Now, the hard part. When to have this gala? Friday afternoon? Saturday? Sunday afternoon? You tell me.

And we tentatively will play this series on the CPP varsity baseball diamond—a full stadium with bleachers!

We’re doing this sometime in May. Best times and dates?

Oh yeah…this is 16-inch SLOW PITCH softball. No gloves required. Just smiles.

New Procedures For Seniors

This e-mail was sent by Dr. James E. Swartz on January 29 regarding the new procedures for seniors. Important information is in the highlighted text.

"This quarter, department chairs will be meeting with “Super-Duper Seniors”. These are students with at least 135% of the total units required to graduate in one or more of their academic majors. SDS students (including those that have filed for graduation) will receive a registration hold that will require them to meet with their department chairs to complete an advising contract. They will be required to meet with the department chair and review the contract each quarter until they obtain their degree.

In addition, all seniors who have completed all of the degree requirements for at least one major and have not applied for graduation will receive a registration hold and a letter from the Registrar’s Office informing them that the process to graduate them at the end of the quarter has been started on their behalf. Students who wish to request a delay in their graduation can submit this request to the Office of Academic Programs, room 98-T7-16 in the CLA Tower

If you have any questions about these procedures, please contact Kathy Street, AVP for Enrollment Services, at kastreet@csupomona.edu, ext. 2572 or Claudia Pinter-Lucke, AVP for Academic Programs, at clpinterluck@csupomona.edu, ext. 3328.

Thank you for your help getting the information out to students.
